The musical form bhangra was born when young Indian DJs living in Britain layered dance-techno electronics over the infectious, pounding beats of traditional Indian drums (namely tabla and tholl) and instrumentation. Bhangra is rooted in its Indian namesake, a traditional folk dance designed for energetic celebration and often performed at festivals and weddings. Young bhangra stars such as MC Achanak added hip programming to the form and brought it into London's underground dance clubs. Songs most often feature the Punjabi language in ragalike calls, and this may be part of the reason the music has stayed within the limits of the dance subculture of London--though the scene has spread to Canada and the West Coast of the U.S. Bhangra Fever is a wildly vibrant primer featuring the most notable artists of the genre and, with its sacred beginnings, offering hypnotic means to get the body moving. --Karen K. Just want I have expected...do wish its a bit more but if you don't own any music of this genre this is a good one to start.

3 out of 5 stars Good record, but the review: a lot of hooey   June 9, 2000

This is a great little pop record (more than 15 years old now)... but this review? "Sacred?" Don't insult the pop artists or the religion with that new age reinterpretation. This is 80s London dance floor boogie, John Travolta dance music with a vaguely Indo-beat. great stuff, but let's keep some perspective!

5 out of 5 stars Shake your tandoori chicken!   January 3, 2000
Modern Bhangra fuses western dance/techno rhythms and harmonies with (Asian) Indian melodies. If you like your dance music exotic, this one's for you! A note of caution for those who must understand the words to appreciate the music: all the tracks are sung in Indian languages, and there are no translations, even for the titles. A great introduction to an energetic form of music, and a great value (2 CDs, 26 songs), as well.

5 out of 5 stars This Rocks the House!!   May 16, 1999

After going to an India-culture night celebration at the University of Oregon I was hooked. Bhangra music with a hip hop stylee had the house jumpin'. There were gals in traditional garb groovin to some happenin' tunes. I went up after the show and asked what the name of the cd was. This was it. The Safri Boys rock, and you can't mess with the sound of Punjabi MC/Achanak. It will have you moving all night long. A definate recomendation for those new to Indian Dance/House/Hip-Hop tunes!!!
